In the oral traditions of the Inuit, the Amarok is a giant wolf of immense power and solitary nature. Unlike the typical wolves of the tundra that travel and hunt in packs, this formidable entity roams the vast Arctic wilderness alone. It acts as a guardian of natural order and a warning to those who dare to venture into the icy dark without the support of their community, emphasizing the vital importance of interdependence and collective responsibility in one of the world's most unforgiving environments.

The name of this great beast carries different nuances across the Arctic. While the term simply means wolf in several Canadian Inuktitut and North Alaskan Iñupiaq dialects, nineteenth-century records by Danish scholar Hinrich Rink indicate that Greenlandic Inuit traditionally reserved the word exclusively for this legendary giant. In these regional accounts, the Amarok is not merely a physical predator but a spiritual force, deeply intertwined with the landscape and capable of perceiving human intentions and transgressions that remain hidden to others.

Traditional narratives collected in Greenland showcase the Amarok in diverse, multifaceted roles. In one widely told story, a neglected and physically stunted boy seeks the strength to overcome his hardships and calls out to the spirit world. An Amarok appears and wrestles the youth, using its tail to shake loose the small, hidden bones that had halted his growth. Through daily wrestling matches with the great wolf, the boy develops immense physical power, eventually proving his worth by saving his village from fearsome bears.

Conversely, other stories highlight the creature's retributive justice when natural boundaries are crossed. One legend describes a grieving mourner who rashly kills an Amarok's pups. When the mother wolf discovers her lost offspring, she retrieves a humanoid soul from a nearby lake, causing the hidden murderer to instantly collapse and die. Through these narratives, the Amarok serves as an enduring symbol of ecological balance and respect, warning humans that the natural world holds secrets and spirits that can never be entirely evaded or concealed.
